Remembering Lucas Backhouse: 2003 - 2021

Nov. 10, 2021, 8 p.m.

One of our many supporters, Angela Backhouse, got in touch with Bob, our Preston walk leader recently. She has asked us to share the following message with our followers and supporters:

"We sadly lost our 18 year old son, Lucas Backhouse, last month (16 Oct) - he took his own life as he simply found this world too difficult to navigate.

He had an amazing circle of friends around him and you may still see his memorial things in the ‘shelter’ in Avenham Park, Preston. They gathered to remember him and light tea lights.

Lucas A Backhouse, 2003 - 2021

If you are able to use Lucas’ story to help spread awareness locally and beyond, please could you let me know. It is still very raw for us, but we will help as much as we can.

I teach in a secondary school and am very motivated to push mental health to the top of my school’s agenda. It is such a big concern.

We need to keep conversations going.

Kind regards,

Angela Backhouse"

At Walk&Talk4Men, it is our duty as a mental health support group for men of all ages to remember those who we have sadly lost to suicide, and to continue to work so more men have a safe supportive space they can turn to in a point of crisis.

We send our deepest condolences to Angela and all of Lucas's family, and we stand in support of them. As a mark of respect, we can announce that all of our remaining walks across the UK this month of November will be held in memory of Lucas, and will begin with a minute's silence to reflect.

On behalf of Angela and Lucas's family, we would also ask all who are attending any of this month's walks to wear a yellow item of clothing for both mental health awareness and to encourage to keep the conversation going.

If you are able to, please donate what you can to the Papyrus charity - this will support others in need now and help prevent young suicide. You can donate by visiting the JustGiving page that has been set up at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/just4boys

If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this post, please know that you can turn to our group for support, even outside of the walks. We are a community and brotherhood outside of this, and we are here to listen and help.

Thank you.
